Description
1842 1st ed Lewis & Clark Expedition Indians PROVENANCE Utah Captain
The Lewis and Clark Expedition, the most famous Americana expansion voyage, was recorded in journals and printed for the public to know just how impressive this journey was. While the first appearance of the contents of the Lewis and Clark journals appeared in 1809, this 1842 Merriwether Lewis perspective was collected and edited by Nicholas Biddle, Paul Allen and Archibald McVickar. According to Sabin, this work is
“today the best work we have on the countries described, and its republications would be an acceptable service.”
Per Howes,
“First authorized and complete account of the most important western exploration and the first of many overland narrative to follow.”
Field’s report on this work, however, is the most thorough.
“This work was commenced by Captain Lewis himself. This is by far the most complete edition (1814, first ed) of this interesting work, whose value to the historian, the student, or the reader for amusement, has in no degree been superseded by the numerous relations of expeditions which have succeeded it. The explorers even anticipated our interest in the remains of aboriginal fortifications, by half a century; and constructed accurate plans of such as they discovered, even then disappearing, and scarcely traceable.”
