Description
1814 Lewis & Clark Expedition Cahokia INDIANS Thomas Jefferson | the Port Folio
A rare, early 19th-century printing of The Port Folio. This excerpt from the 1814 edition contains portions of interesting essays including:
“On the Variety of Complexion in the Human Species” by Samuel Stanhope Smith
Excerpts from “Patronage” – a novel by Maria Edgeworth
Original poems
However, the primary draw of this particular example is the inclusion of a biography of Captain Meriwether Lewis, the famed American explorer. This biography describes his time in the American military as well as, most desirably, his voyage along the Missouri River with William Clark. It notes their encounters with Indian tribes, and the delivering of letters to the Cahokia Indians from the U.S. government through a letter from President Thomas Jefferson.
