Michael Macnamara was a Captain in the Civil War who acted as a war correspondent present at the surrender of General Lee. He wrote his book “Irish Ninth in Bivouac and Battle” while on the battlefield with his regiment at Bealeton Station in the winter of 1863 to 1864. This regimental history of the first ethnic regiment, was composed of Irish American men gained a reputation as a hard-fighting regiment, flying the Irish flag and for sharing their Irish culture.
