Period mahogany frame, gilt fillet.

A beautiful studio portrait from the American Civil War. It shows an Union Soldier standing next to a chair with velvet cushions. His pose and gaze express a sense of casualty and comfort withthe act of being photographed. On the chair next to him rests his cap and a walking cane, indicating that he could have been injured during the war and had difficulty walking. His cheeks and lips are lightly hand-colored. There is some deterioration around the border of the image, probably from the mount glue.
