[PHOTOGRAPHY] W.H. Smith collection; Winnie-the-pooh in 3-D
A fascinating lot with a stereographic camera, viewer, negatives, anaglyph prints and a log book once owned by William Hamilton Smith.
W. H. Smith operated the Carlton Studio, in Derby, England, for a period before the Great War. This collection contains prints ranging from the 1910s to the 1960s and is housed in its original wood box plus the camera used by the photographer. It includes:
Stereo box camera,"Stereo Puck" by Thurnton-Pickard, ca. 1932; Stereo Viewer, The "Perfecscope," by H.C. White Co. 1900; 1 small log book with records dated from the 1950s; 34 mounted stereographic gelatin silver prints; 9 stereo glass positives/negatives collodion plates; 4 autochromes; 8 colour film slides; 6 anaglyphs prints with viewing masks; and more than 150 gelatin silver negatives and prints. This collection also contains a stereograph photograph of a black bear taken in the London Zoo in 1924, probably the same bear that inspired A. A. Milne to write Winnie-the-Pooh. This same photograph was also used to create a series of anaglyphs cards for Zoological Gardens London [included].
