**First Time At Auction**

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A beautiful handle for a ceremonial sword known as a kris (keris), hand-carved from a mottled green stone with beige, orange, grey, and dark-green inclusions. Depicted on this handle is a more naturalistic rendering of the great hero demon Bhima, illustrated seated atop a small stool with one leg curled around the verso. He has a rotund body, holds a small ball in one hand, and has elongated fingernails on the other. His bulbous head boasts bejeweled ears, recessed eyes beneath slender brows, and an intricate crown atop his bald pate. Size: 1.75" W x 4.75" H (4.4 cm x 12.1 cm); 5.55" H (14.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Repaired from two large pieces with small losses and light adhesive residue along break lines. Small chips to base, figure, and head, with light softening to some finer details, and light encrustations within some recessed areas. Light earthen deposits throughout.
