Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fabulous woven textile panel in hues of sandy beige and caramel. The lovely example presents four rows and eight columns featuring a repeated abstract anthropomorphic/zoomorphic figure in a rectangular frame separated by a border of a swirling abstract motif. The intriguing figure displays a trapezoidal body, delineated legs, four long toes, slender raised arms bent at the elbows, a pair of huge, coiled horns, and a sizable visage with ovoid eyes and an open mouth. The bottom quarter of the textile is adorned with an intricately woven gridded pattern. Size: 16" W x 15" H (40.6 cm x 38.1 cm); Size of frame: 20.375" W x 16.375" H (51.8 cm x 41.6 cm)

Fragment of a larger piece. Fraying and losses to peripheries with tearing on top and bottom. Staining to original color and loosening to some interior and peripheral threads. Great remaining details.
