Description
Slavery.- [?Haywood (Eliza)] Memoirs of an Unfortunate Young Nobleman, return'd from a Thirteen Years Slavery in America..., first edition, half-title, issue with "and sold" at end of second line of imprint on title and p.1 with woodcut head-piece of cherub and catchword "Words" at foot, 7pp.advertisements at end, some leaves becoming loose, contemporary calf with double gilt fillet border, spine ruled in gilt with green roan label, a little rubbed and marked, joints cracked, 8vo, for J.Freeman, 1743.

⁂ Novel based on the life of, and sometimes attributed to, James Annesley who claimed that his uncle, the Earl of Anglesey, had sold him into slavery in an attempt to secure the title for himself. He eventually returned to London and took his uncle to court, successfully retrieving his estates but not his titles before he died in 1744. The story inspired many writers, notably Smollett in Peregrine Pickle, Scott in Guy Mannering, and R.L.Stevenson in Kidnapped.
The work takes place partly on plantations in Delaware; sequels were published in two volumes in 1743 and 1747.
