He spent his youth in a variety of schools and scarcely distinguished himself there. At a very tender age he showed good ability to draw and sculpt, however. Young Charles did have a great interest in the West with its trappers, mountain men, cowboys, adventure, and wildlife. After a long effort to educate Charles, his parents consented to let him go West. Thus, at 15, in March of 1880, Charles Russell left to go to Montana. His struggles were great during his early years, but his friendliness, story telling ability, and sketching stood him in good stead. Although he was never much of a wrangler, herder, or trapper, he loved the carefree life. A great change occurred for footloose Russell when he married Nancy Cooper in 1896. He had to come to grips with earning a living and, with the firm, determined assistance of his wife, he gradually began to do so with his artistry. By 1903 his paintings had been reproduced by Brown & Bigelow of St. Paul as calendars. He gained publicity at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1903. Finally, his work was accepted for showing in New York City in 1911 by the Folson Galleries. Much of the remainder of Russell's life was filled with increasing fame as a documentary painter and sculptor of the Old West. He made acquaintance with many famous people of the era, including Will Rogers. Although his true home was in Montana, he spent win ters in Southern California with his more socially conscious wife. His last honor while living was an honorary Doctor of Laws fromthe University of Montana. C. M. Russell died on Oct. 24, 1926. TEWA PRINTS AND NOTES"Shipping cost: $40.
