Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 800 CE. A brilliantly crafted mold-made figural vessel with veristic facial features, a thick conical spout, and a minimalist target motif painted across its body. The figureÂ’s visage is a masterpiece displaying all the attributes of fine Moche craftsmanship with chiseled contours that accentuate high cheek bones, a protruding nose with slightly flared nostrils, and deep elliptical eyes set beneath a prominent brow line. A broad chin and a closed mouth complete a somber expression - exuding the impression that this figure is gazing deep within a great mystical ether. A very intriguing example! Size: 6.25" W x 9" H (15.9 cm x 22.9 cm)
The Moche were perhaps the only ancient culture in the Americas to produce portrait vessels. The sculptor's intent was to present a very realistic depiction, and interestingly, scholars have been able to follow the progression of age and rank of several of individuals portrayed in pottery.
Provenance: Deaccessioned from Ashland University, Ashland, OH, donated to the University between 7/14/1994 and 12/31/1998.
