North America, Southwestern United States, ca. early 20th century CE. An iron knife with a leather sheath, buffalo horn handle, and leather carrying pouch. The knife has a deadly looking flat blade with a curved cutting edge and pointed tip. Though it could be used for defense, its main purpose was to skin game animals. The sheath is comprised of two sheets of leather that are stitched and secured by brass rivets to cover the blade. The sheath is tied to the strap of the pouch with leather cords. The buffalo horn handle may have been an ornamental piece with a perforation for suspension or adding additional decorative elements. The pouch is attached to the thick strap with brass rivets and stitched together from two pieces to create a thin square shaped pocket. This may have been the trusted side weapon and pouch for a frontiersman traveling the rugged and wild terrain. Size of knife: 11.9" L (30.2 cm) pouch & strap: 24" L x 7" W (61 cm x 17.8 cm)
