M.C. Escher (Dutch, 1898-1972)
Two Impressions: The Two Blocks for Circle Limit IV (Heaven and Hell), 1960 (see Bool et al., 436). Both monogrammed and dated within the block. Woodcuts, one in ochre, the other in black, image sizes approximately 8 1/2 x 13 in. (21.5 x 33.0 cm), presented in a single frame. Condition: Not examined out of frame. N.B. The two images, laid black over ochre, and aligned and printed three times each would create the circular composition with a diameter of 16 3/8 inches. Condition reportCondition: These are probably posthumous impressions: both images indicate that a 3/4 inch hole has been drilled into the block towards the left side. Out of the frame the images are each on their own sheet of tissue-like paper. The sheets measure 12 1/4 x 19 inches for the black impression, and slightly larger for the ochre. The ochre sheet has creases along the lower edge. Neither has any annotations.
