A Colonial Banknote
Item Details
Description
A Colonial Banknote signed by both a Declaration of Independence Signer (John Morton) and an anti-Declaration delegate (Charles Humphreys). Pennsylvania, 18 Pence. April 3, 1772 (Fr-PA155). An intact, easily VG or better example with a single rather short horizontal fold split at the right edge. Both Morton and Humphreys were delegates to the Continental Congress during the period from 1774 to 1776. Not only was Morton a Declaration signer, he also has the distinction of being chairman of the committee that wrote the Articles of Confederation, as well as being the first Declaration signer to die. Humphreys, though sympathetic to the cause of liberty, was a devout Quaker and voted against Independence as he felt it would escalate the war with Britain. He shortly thereafter resigned from Congress. A fascinating piece of American history and certainly worthy of consideration. Ex Coin Galleries Sale (July 17, 1991; lot # 4122) with lot card still accompanying this banknote. Est. $600.
