Elizabeth Nourse (Ohio, 1859-1938), Enfants Debout
Watercolor and pastel on paper, ca 1908, titled Enfants Debout (translated, Children Standing) signed l.r.; 21.5 x 14.4 in. Like the following example by Nourse, this painting depicts an everyday scene of French peasants. Again, Nourse almost certainly sketched some part of this scene from observation. However, unlike the other work by Nourse offered in this sale, this drawing was probably made while Nourse was living in Paris. EXHIBITED Golden Era of Art, Indian Hill Historical Museum Association, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1978. Additionally, the Catalogue Raisonne explains that Labels on the back of this picture give the title and also list Salon, 1908 and Philadelphia Exposition and 1912, but no records have been found for these entries. BIBLIOGRAPHY Mary Alice Heekin Burke, Elizabeth Nourse, 1859-1938: A Salon Career (Smithsonian Institution Press, 1983), 198 (pictured).
