Description
19th century AD. A bifacial gold cross pendant: front face with central garnet cabochon set in raised circular cell, encircled by an applied faux ropework border, four clusters of three applied granules, single applied granule to both corners of each arm of the cross; reverse with series of engraved lozenges, a number populated with concentric lozenge motifs, leaving one blank lozenge to the centre and to each arm, creating a cross motif from the blanks, each 'blank' lozenge inscribed with one character from two combined Greek inscriptions: '???' = life (horizontal) and '??C' = light (vertical); tubular ribbed suspension loop above. See Wamser, L., Die Welt von Byzanz - Europas Östliches Erbe, München, 2004, items 520-522, for broadly similar. 7.88 grams, 38mm (1 1/2"). Ex collection of a Surrey, UK, gentleman; acquired on the UK art market; previously on the European art market before 2000. The inscription is associated with the double image of Jesus Christ as light of the world and giver of life, according to Gospel of John 8:12: 'Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'
