Naval cutlass sword of the classic Confederate States style which was modeled after the Ames USN model 1841. It does not have the three large rivets used in the US Naval model. Examples can be found in Albaugh's "Confederate Edged Weapons", page 94-5 and "American Swords From The Medicus Collection", page 26. Blade is finely forged and through mounted end is peened over the brass hilt in a scale pattern. A "D" shaped guard, an eagle at the pommel and fish scale grip, finish the weapon. Use in combat is evident from the nicks at the tip and the brass guard has stopped a number of opposing blades. Attributed to Thomas, Griswold & Co., New Orleans.
