Ancient Peru, Inca, post conquest period, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. An expressive blackware pottery vessel depicting the head of a human subject with an intriguing visage comprised of almond-shaped eyes, a fleshy nose, an open mouth revealing an upper row of teeth, and pronounced ears that appear to be adorned with ornaments. All is topped by a helmet or tight-fitting cap. The vessel rests upon a flat base, and the lower section of a spout emerges from the top of the head. A lovely blackware vessel with wonderful burnishing marks from the post-conquest Inca peoples, impressive for its artistry, technical prowess, and intriguing imagery!
