Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Inca, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. An unusual blackware face vessel created by the Inca culture. The vessel depicts an expressive visage of a gentleman with deeply set eyes, a toothy smile, and one protruding cheek, most likely containing a wad of coca. Most impressive is the subject's meticulously delineated plaited coiffure that is capped by an intricately patterned head covering and leads up to the neck and spout of the vessel. The form of the vessel closely mirrors the form known as an aryballos - one that is strictly unique to the Inca and found in no other Pre-Columbian culture. Size: 5.5" W x 9.5" H (14 cm x 24.1 cm)
