Item Details
Description
North America, United States, or England, ca. 19th century CE. A handmade wooden sign of a mermaid lying on her side with her head propped in her hand. This recumbent lady is hand-carved from a large panel of wood then painted in vibrant and enticing hues. Her tail fins curve behind her, and she is nude, with her hair streaming over her shoulders. Mermaids were popular signs and markers for taverns and pubs along the coast that catered toward sailors. This example retains much of the red, yellow, black, and blue pigments despite exposure to the elements, which add a wonderful rustic patina. Size: 41" L x 11.5" W (104.1 cm x 29.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
