Description
16th-17th c. Sumatra Island, Benkulu style Jawa Demam Kris (keris) Knife Handle, with overall floral decoration, on a museum stand, 2 5/8" tall. Jawa Demam represents a diety that is half bird and half human, most likely a Garuda, depicted in a squatting position and holding its sides as if shivering in the cold. Interestingly, the word demam literally means fever in Bahasa. Nice wear, age and use patina, holed at top. Provenance: Ex-private collection of Ami Brown, owner of the Coca-Cola franchise in Israel.
