John McLean ALS: He Was U.S. Postmaster General & Later Supreme Court Associate Justice

A 1p autograph letter signed by John McLean (1785-1861) as "John McLean" near center right. Written in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 30, 1854 on bifold paper. The inner pages and last page are blank. With expected transmittal folds. Isolated stains and ink erosion affecting part of his correspondent's name or title near the center. Scattered pencil inscriptions from former collectors. Else very good to near fine. 7.875" x 9.75."

McLean was well into his 32-year-long tenure as a U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice when he penned this letter to one "Mr Walter Scott." McLean writes in part: "I have received your's [sic] of the 25th inst. and I take pleasure in complying with your request, and in saying that I am very respectfully yours John McLean."

President James Monroe appointed John McLean to the role of U.S. Postmaster General in 1823, and President John Quincy Adams renewed this appointment. McLean resigned from his post in 1829 in order to accept President Andrew Jackson's nomination for Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. McLean served as Associate Justice until his death in early April 1861.
