Founding Father Thomas Mifflin Signed Legal Document
1p partially printed, measuring 16" x 13.25", Philadelphia, dated October 15, 1790. A document from the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania, granting "James Ash Esq., the Office of Sheriff of the said City & County of Philadelphia…" Signed by Nathan Irwin as a witness. With two large paper and red wax seals. The document has flattened folds, causing separations in places. Additional areas of paper loss and chipping. These separations and paper loss have been silked. Light uneven toning and foxing throughout. Large and bold signature by Mifflin, measuring 6.5" x 1".
Thomas Mifflin (1744-1800) was commissioned as a major in the Continental Army and was then appointed an aide-de-camp to George Washington. In August 1775, Washington made Mifflin the first Quartermaster General of the army. During the war, Mifflin also served in the Continental Congress for two terms and personally accepted George Washington's military resignation on December 23, 1783. After the war, he became Pennsylvania's first Governor, serving from 1790 to 1799.
