Description
A highly desirable and complete set of five collector's prints featuring the comic book character the Lone Ranger. The five pictures from the 1938 Series A were part of a sales promotion sponsored by chewing gum company Gum, Incorporated. Four of the five examples are text back, meaning they include information about the scene depicted, as well as provide ordering instructions. Each item is graded and encapsulated in a Beckett Grading Services slab. Expected wear including wrinkles, corner wear, light toning and aging, and isolated stains, else vibrantly colored and in overall good condition. Beckett grades range from 1.5 to 4.5 at the highest (itemized below.) Each print measures 8" x 10," and each slab measures 13.125" x 9.5."
The lot is comprised of all five cards in 1938's Series A:
1. "Tonto Saves the Lone Ranger," showing Tonto carrying the Lone Ranger to safety after outlaws attacked his group of Texas Rangers. Beckett serial number 0006733249. Graded 4 or VG-EX.
2. "The Lone Ranger Licks Kester," depicting the Lone Ranger punching out the Confederate Army deserter Kester, while Tonto keeps the other henchmen at bay. Beckett serial number 0007723088. Graded 2 or good.
3. "The Lone Ranger Rescues Joan at the Pit," showing the hero and his love interest Joan Blanchard on horseback eluding Jeffries' men. Beckett serial number 0006733251. Graded 1.5 or fair.
4. "Tonto Fights off the Troopers," depicting Tonto picking off men with his gun while Joan and the Lone Ranger escape. Beckett serial number 0007723090. Graded 2.5 or G-VG.
5. "The Lone Ranger Foils a Murderer," showing the Lone Ranger protecting an injured man at the mouth of a cave. Beckett serial number 0006733255. Graded 4.5 or VG-Ex+.
The collector's prints in this set were issued prior to the 1940 Gum, Inc. card set, and they feature art that was not reproduced on any of those later cards. The prints were available according to different payment plans. For example, they could be purchased individually for five gum wrappers and three cents each, or purchased as a group of five for twenty five gum wrappers and ten cents total.
