Item Details
Description

Six Vintage Stereoviews, Ca. 1920s: Mt. Vernon, Richmond, Slavery, etc.

A group of six printed photograph cards, stereograph format, Ca. 1920s. All measure 7" x 3.5". The cards were produced by Keystone View Company, copyright Underwood & Underwood. Stereoscopic images, or a stereogram, refer to a pair of images that, when viewed with a stereoscope, present a 3D depth to the image. Photographs included are as follows:

H87, VS3227: Home of Washington, Mt. Vernon, Va.
H90, 26327: Slave Quarters at Mt. Vernon
H125, 16568: Old Slave Market, at Richmond, Va.
H131, V26150: Confederate Capital
P163, 23089: Mt. Vernon, the Home of Washington
H227, V26102: The Wright Airplane in Flight, Fort Meyer, Va.

All of the cards have a printed information section on verso, with historical and/or biographical details. All have light toning and dampstaining at the edges. Curved edges. Else good.

The Keystone View Company was founded in Meadville, PA, in 1892 by L. Singley. Originally, Singley took all the images, but there were later dozens of photographers hired and Keystone also bought the stock of floundering photography companies. As a result, Keystone was said to have had some 2 million negatives by the mid-1930's. By the 1920s the Keystone Company had offices in London, Paris, Sidney, Capetown, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. The V at the beginning of some numbers indicates that the photo was originally an Underwood & Underwood view.
