Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 700 CE. A mesmerizing mold-made storage vessel with a serpentine motif. The jar rests on a flat base, and the elongated body is molded into billowing, rounded shapes that protruded from the sides. Encircling the body is a snake, with a head that is more feline than reptile, and has rounded ears. Fittingly this snake is a mythological creature known as the "eared serpent." The snake is in low relief but painted a beige hue to contrast with the orange ground. At the top is a wide, flared spout that is slip painted beige. The lustrous glaze and textured surface make for a very attractive and interesting piece! Size: 9" L x 8.25" H (22.9 cm x 21 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
