Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru. Moche III ca. 450 to 550 CE. A very fine and expressive pottery stirrup jar in the menacing form of Ai Apec. Ai Apec was the god of the underworld and just an all-around bad dude. He is shown squatting with knees folded to his chest, chubby arms at his thighs. His ferocious face shows a nice set of upper and lower canines. The expression on his face is meant to send chills into the owner of this chicha bottle! Even more menacing are the large twin snakes that slither from the reverse to his head where each is ready to strike. Looping stirrup spout, allowing it to be worn at the waist via a belt or strap. Size: 6.5" L x 5.5" W x 8" H (16.5 cm x 14 cm x 20.3 cm)
