Sumter; second in command at First Bull Run and at Shiloh, assuming command when Johnston was killed. ALS ~G.T. Beauregard,~ 1p, 5~x8~, New Orleans, LA, Oct. 29, 1868. On New Orleans Jackson and Great Northern Railroad Company letterhead to Achille Vogue in London. In full: ~My dear Sir, Your favor of the 3rd ulto. has just been received. I take pleasure in complying with your request. When in England in 1866, I received so many civilities from its inhabitants that I am but too happy to gratify the desire of one of them.
