Pierre G.T. Beauregard Signed Railroad Pass as President of Same

Small card, measuring 3.625" x 2.25", New Orleans, dated March 18, 1869. A New Orleans, Jackson & G.N.R.R. pass signed "G.T. Beauregard Prest." reading "Pass to be used with a letter from President N. Jersey RR & Transp. Co. until 31st December 1869." On verso is a typed paragraph outlining the pass' regulations, along with a handwritten "1869." The card has been tipped into a small sheet, measuring 4" x 2.625" overall. With light soiling and wear to edges. Boldly signed, very fine.

Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard (1818-1893) was a Confederate general, best remembered for leading the attack on Fort Sumter which initiated the American Civil War. He rarely used his first name and often signed all his correspondences as "G.T. Beauregard." After the war, he reluctantly swore an oath of loyalty and became chief engineer and general superintendent of the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad. He was promoted to president in 1866 and served in this capacity until 1870, when he was removed in a hostile takeover.
