Description
Diné [Navajo] Germantown Child's Blanket, ca. 1865-1875
commercial yarns, aniline dyes
This is a wonderful and unique example of a period child’s blanket. It still has the remains of the multicolored fringe that was added by an obviously proud mother. Based upon the analysis of Dr. Teresa Wilkins of the University of New Mexico, this blanket was made “with commercial [Germantown] yarn re-twisted by the weaver for a hard, tight finish”. The tightness of the weaver made it waterproof. Through an analysis of the threads, she estimated that the blanket was made between 1865 and 1875. That being the case, it is entirely possible that it was carried on the “Long Walk” to Lincoln County, NM.
49 x 37 in. (124.46 x 93.98 cm.)
