Description
Manner of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Flemish, 1599-1641) "Portrait of a Lady in Blue", oil on canvas, unsigned, 48" x 39". Presented in a deeply carved oak and pine frame affixed with a partial label, printed "Wife of Sir Edward Barrett Lord Newburgh. By Van Dyke". Provenance: Henry Stern Antiques, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Condition
Painting has been relined and professionally restored. Black light examination shows scattered touch-ups and inpainting repairs, mostly in the background. There appears to be an l-shaped, 2" long repaired tear above the head , a repaired small puncture to top of the hair and in the bodice, a 4" and a 1" repaired vertical tear above the left shoulder. All of these are hardly visible to the naked eye. There are very minor touch-ups to the face and hands. There is a minor surface scratch to the bottom right portion of the canvas and appears to have spotty residue of candle wax which is easily removed, to the bottom portion of the canvas. Minor, faint craquelure. Painting exhibits good color and masterful execution of the face, hair and hands.
