Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of Civil War letters and ephemera representing multiple soldiers, a war-date governor, and including Andersonville POW letter from Private Samuel W. Armington (1837-1913), Co. D, Massachusetts 15th Infantry.9 soldiers letters spanning 1861-1865; an October 1862 document signed ("A.G. Curtin") by Pennsylvania Governor A.G. Curtain authorizing Rev. William Gerhardt to minister to a soldier; an 1861 pass for admittance to Camp Constitution in Portsmouth, New Hampshire; a "Republican Ticket" for the 1860 Presidential Election listing candidates Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin; a "Republican Ticket" for New Hampshire including candidate Nathaniel S. Berry; a cabinet card of unidentified members of the GAR; a cabinet card with a post-war view of "Hancock Avenue" at Gettysburg Battlefield; and more.Notable is a letter from Private Samuel W. Armington. HDS indicates Armington enlisted on 1/3/1862 at Worcester, MA as a private and mustered into Co. D MA 15th Infantry. He was listed as a POW 11/27/1863 at Mine Run, VA and released 12/14/1864. The letter offered here was written from "Camp Sumter / Andersonville Ga" on 18 July 1864, approximately 7 months post-capture, and is addressed to his parents. It reads: "I am still a prisoner here my health remains pretty good. I try to keep up good courage & shall get out sometime. The 15th Regt is all here now the remnant of them was captured last month so I have plenty of company give my best wishes to all at home. From Your Son / Sam Armington / Prisoner of War."
