[CIVIL WAR]. Confederate letters and documents related to multiple southern states.

A group of Confederate letters and documents related to the states of Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia. Notable is a letter of 25 April 1861 letter written in Shelbyville, TN, which demonstrates the great enthusiasm with which secessionist southerners greeted the early days of the war. Bold manuscript reads, "Great Excitement / War news / The Coercer Lincoln / Jeff Davis / The greatest excitement prevails in M Tennessee since the war fever has commenced raging.... It is said Jefferson Davis intends being in New York City in 15 days & will conquer the U States & the balance of mankind. / Lincoln has done for the Secessionists what they could not do for themselves...." Additional letters include a letter from Lt. George Washington Wright, 6th Alabama Cavalry, to his sister, 16 April 1863; and four more unrelated, personal letters from other southern individuals.
