Greek Attic Red-Figure Skyphos - Q Painter
Item Details
Description
Ancient Greece, Athens, attributed to Q Painter, ca. 4th century BCE. A beautiful pottery skyphos presenting a flared rim and a hemispherical body flanked by a pair of dramatic, upward-sweeping handles, all sitting upon an applied, tiered foot. Decorated with red figure painting, the ancient vessel displays 2 scenes of Eros (Roman Cupid), the god of love and desire, on its exterior: on one side the winged deity is shown pursuing a woman, while on the other Eros rides a horse in profile facing right. A lovely abstract design of large petaloid motifs separates the 2 scenes. The interior of the elegant dish exhibits an impressed circular design at its basin and a dotted pattern near its rim. Size: 7.5" W x 2.875" H (19 cm x 7.3 cm)

According to British Museum, the Q painter was an "Athenian red-figure vase-painter whose name is unknown. Nevertheless consistent individual characteristics of style suggest the existence of a unique artistic personality. Beazley invented the fanciful appellation of the Q Painter in order to give a name to a group of vases clearly by a single hand. He was a cup painter who was probably part of the workshop of the Jena Painter (q.v.)."
