Description
A Roman creme-ware 'milk' beaker, Egypt, c. 3rd - 4th Century AD, the conical vessel tapering to a point at the base. The mouth is flared with a pouring spout, a ring enclosing two "breasts" below which also serve as spouts. The sides of the vessel decorated with attractive ribbing, flowing from top to bottom. H: 6 1/4" (15.6 cm). Intact with reddish deposits. A rare later adaptation of the "Bes" jars, which were used to feed milk to sick children. Ex Orange County private collection.
