DESCRIPTION: 1759 Catechism of Martin Luther Printed by Christoph Sauer (Pennsylvania, 1695-1758). In original German. Handwritten notes to both interior covers. Christophe Sauer settled in Germantown Pennsylvania in 1724 and married a member of the community at the Ephrata Cloister. In 1738 Sauer began to publish almanacs, calendars, books, and newspapers in a type face that Pennsylvania German readers could read more easily than the standard Roman typefaces used by Franklin in Philadelphia. PROVENANCE: From a Philadelphia family. The consignor is a direct descendant of Mary Rittenhouse (1795-1873). MEASUREMENTS: 3-3/4" long x 3" wide x 1/2" high. CONDITION: Wear to covers, spine, and pages as expected with age and use. Curling to corners of pages. One page with area of loss. IMPORTANT: Before bidding, please read the terms and conditions.
