Description
Unusual carved wooden gavel by Thomas Jefferson Craddock, (born circa 1842) a Civil War veteran who carved and sold walking sticks and other items near Thomas Jefferson's tomb at Monticello after the war. The gavel carved with fraternal heraldry with clasped hands and "D of A" in a shield before crossed flags and with the words on the head and sides: "Golden Rule, Council of 10", and "In Memory of Charles Hillingas Presented by His Mother". Acorn finial at tip of handle. This is the only Thomas Jefferson Craddock gavel we have seen. Approx. 10 1/2" long.
