Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Inca, ca. 1450 to 1532 CE. A delightful hand-built pottery jar that boasts a strong decorative program of geometric and stylized avian motifs. The body is a compressed carinated shape, with a rounded but stable base. The squat neck has a broad lip and may have held in place a lid at one time. The exterior is slip painted with creamy beige and red bands as well as black checkered motif. Across the broad shoulder is a zigzagging line that arches over abstract birds that are shown in profile with open beaks. This is a beautiful vessel with patterning that perhaps took inspiration from woven textiles. Size: 5.5" Diameter x 3.75" H (14 cm x 9.5 cm)

Intact! Old inventory label on base. Some areas of fading pigments and chipping, but motifs are clear. Light mineral and earthen deposits on interior.
