Description
A historical handwritten Revolutionary War petition, dated 1780, to the members of "the House of Assembly", State of Maryland, from three captive officers of Maryland, who were expected to soon be released via a prisoner exchange. They are requesting financial and material assistance for "the common necessaries of life" from their government for themselves and other prisoners as a result of being taken prisoner in defense of their country and enduring much hardship during their internment. The letter is titled "A Representation / Captive / from the officers of Maryland to their General Assembly" and is signed by 3 officers at Annapolis, Lieut. Col. Nath. Ramsay, Capt. J. Swan, and Lieut. Per Fitzhugh and dated April 7th 1780. The following information was found on the internet regarding Lt. Col. Ransay - "Ramsey was a delegate to the Maryland Convention (the revolutionary assembly) in 1775. In 1776 he joined the Continental Army as a captain in Colonel Smallwood's 1st Maryland Regiment, and went north in time to see action in the Battle of Long Island in August. In December he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and placed in command of the 3rd Maryland Regiment. He led them in the defense of Philadelphia in 1777. At the Battle of Monmouth, in June 1778, Ramsey was asked by General Washington to stop the British advance after General Lee's initial retreat, and gain time for Washington to rally his other troops. He did so, but his regiment took heavy casualties. Ramsey himself was seriously wounded, left for dead, and taken prisoner. By the time he was exchanged, his regiment had gone south with General Nathanael Greene's forces. He returned to Maryland, and his only remaining military role was in recruiting. He retired from the army on January 1, 1781, and resumed the practice of law in Cecil County. At the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, Ramsey was admitted as an original member of The Society of the Cincinnati in the state of Maryland and served as the first Treasurer of the Maryland Society." - Per Fitzhugh, probably Lt. Perigrene Fitzhugh - He joined the Army of the Revolution as lieutenant of the Third Regiment of Dragoons of the Virginia Continental line and soon was promoted to captain. He was taken prisoner during the war and was exchanged in October 1780 (the year this letter was written) - he served as an aide-de-camp to Gen. G. Washington from 1781 to 1782. He died in Maryland. There were several J. Swan's in the war, and not much is none about them.
