John Brown (1800-1859) is undoubtedly one of the most controversial figures of the 19th century. History has both vilified him as a religious fanatic guilty of the Pottawatomie Massacre, and in turn as hero sometimes credited with starting the chain of events that would eventually lead to the freeing of the slaves.
