Description
(SLAVERY & ABOLITION.) Martin M. Lawrence, photographer. Portrait of John Brown. Salted paper photograph, 7¼ x 5¼ inches oval, on original plain mount with photographer's embossed stamp; light spotting in image, minor wear to mount. New York, circa 1858 This is believed to be the first commercially available photograph of John Brown, preceded only by ambrotypes and daguerreotypes. It was reproduced shortly after his arrest in the 19 November 1859 issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated, which stated that it was "from a photograph taken one year ago by Martin M. Lawrence." The blind stamp on this example is credited to "Lawrence's Photographs."
