Description
A wonderful old carved wooden performance dance mask from the island of Java, Indonesia. Known as a Topeng, which translates as "Close to the face" This mask at one time would have been accompanied with an elaborate costume and worn during ceremonial dances, perhaps before royalty or used as entertainment in local villages. The mask measures 8.25 x 6.25 and will also include a professional custom display stand. Provenance: Ex Robert Banks collection, Maryland.

Well handled and worn, signs of field use over many years.
