Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Michoacan, Chupicuaro, Colima, and Maya, ca. 500 BCE to 900 CE. A collection of 9 assorted pottery, stone, and shell tools, jewelry, and figures. The largest piece is a hand-carved Colima shell bracelet with a figural finial protruding from the band. The 2 other jewelry pieces are earspools; one made from green jade by Maya artisans, and the other is a Colima redware spool. The black hematite blade and 2 quartzite stones are also Maya. The last 3 are hand-built terracotta figures. The largest is a Michoacan made woman, standing upright with applied details and pinched eyes on an oversized head. The next is similarly formed by Chupicuaro artisans and is known as a "pretty lady" based on the stylized feminine form. The last Chupicuaro figurine is of a woman carrying a child on her back. This is a nice variety of tools and artistry from Pre-Columbian artisans. Size shell bracelet: 3.5" Diameter (8.9 cm); largest figure: 2.6" L x 1.75" W (6.6 cm x 4.4 cm)

For a similar Chupicuaro figure carrying a child, please see the Art Institute of Chicago website, reference number: 1965.1164.

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
