Item Details
Description
A Ridgway "Columbian Star" Transferware Soup Tureen and Platter
Circa 1840
including two ladles.
stamp mark to underside of platter.
Height of tureen 10 1/2 inches.
Length of platter 14 1/2 x width 11 1/2 inches.

The Columbian Star pattern was issued in response to William Henry Harrison's 1840 campaign for the United States Presidency. Despite his wealth and social prominence, Harrison campaigned as a humble farmer from North Bend, Ohio and is often depicted in campaign ephemera and literature standing outside a log cabin, plow in hand. A fine example from what is acknowledged to be the first political campaign to heavily utilize slogans and collateral.
