Description
U kolkhoza na polyakh kukhnya peredvizhka pomogayet sel'khozplan vypolnit' s izlishkom [A Mobile Kitchen Sent to the Fields Helps Kolkhozniks to Exceed the Plan Quotas], a poster by an anonymous artist (the translation of the rhymed caption is approximate). Published by IZOGIZ, Moscow - Leningrad, 1931, 73 x 50 cm.
The theme of ”Peasants Lunch in the Field” has attracted painters since the times of Bruegel the Elder, and the artist of this poster could not resist the siren's call. One will be hard pressed to discern any signs of revolutionary enthusiasm in his/her kolkhozniks; but the poster is filled with the sense of calmness and peace.
The previous owner of this poster attributed it to Valentina Kulagina (1902-1987). We mention this out of respect to the knowledgeable “old school” collector, and because a willing viewer may notice some parallels between this poster, and Kulagina's photographs of women peasants in the fields from the late 1930s. Our valuation is based strictly on the poster's artistic merits, and not on the unconfirmed attribution.
