Description
Marshrutizatsiya - Real'ny put' k uluchsheniyu oborota vagonov [Routing Offers A Real Opportunity to Improve the Freight Turnover Time], a poster by Arkady Stavrovsky (1903-1980). OGIZ-IZOGIZ, Moscow - Leningrad, 1932, 70.5 x 98 cm.
After the major transportation crisis in early 1931, the Communist Party Central Committee declared railway transport to be "one of the main bottlenecks in the economy", increased the railway development budget, and set higher freight turnover goals. This poster, issued in 1932 in anticipation of another difficult winter season, outlines one of the ways to improve the freight turnover without a major additional investment. The somber quote at the bottom, extracted from the order of new Railway Transportation Commissar Andreev, contains a stark reminder that railway workers “carry special responsibility for meeting the State economic plan's goals”.
Artist Arkady Stavrovsky is remembered primarily as a painter. He was the member of “Bytie” art group (1921-1928) and later of AKhRR. In the late 1930s and after the war, he also worked on decorating major public buildings.
