Description
"Pinocchio" by C. Collodi illustrated by Maud and Miska Petersham, published by Garden City Publishing, New York, 1932.
Hard boards, original publisher's cloth with illustration on the front board, green lettering on spine, [small cloth damages, some wear and soiling: see photos]; 6.1/2" x 9"; illustrated endpapers [name inside cover in 'this is my book' section], 323 pages, color frontispiece, title page and three color plates on glossy paper [all listed plates are present]; a few small stains, very good condition.
"Pinocchio is by all odds the best puppet-story to be found anywhere, and we sigh in sympathy with the funny little chap's scrapes and punishments, or chuckle at his pranks, while we feel like exclaiming, "Why, how much Pinocchio must have been like me!"
The author of this captivating tale, Signor Lorenzini (1826-1890), or "Collodi" --as he liked to call himself after his native town in Italy, devoted himself to writing and education, believing that one pleasing way to teach was through the puppet-plays.
Maud Fuller Petersham (1890-1971) and Miska Petersham (1888-1960) were American writers and illustrators who helped set the direction for illustrated children's books as known today. The Petershams worked closely with such pioneering children's book editors as Louise Seaman Bechtel and May Massee, and with such innovative printers as Charles Stringer and William Glaser. They worked as a seamless partnership for more than five decades. Both prolific and versatile, they produced illustrations for more than 120 trade and textbooks, anthologies, and picture books. Of the 50 books they both wrote and illustrated, many were recognized with important awards or critical acclaim. They are known for technical excellence, exuberant color, and the introduction of international folk and modernist themes.
