Description
"Following the Equator. A Journey Around the World" by Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens), with portrait frontispiece from a photograph of the author and 192 other illustrations by notable illustrators. First Edition published by the American Publishing Company in 1897 (MDCCCXCVII); First Printing (points of first issue: the title page in black and green, has single publisher on the title page - single-location imprint -- no mentioning of New York, as in later states, but without printer's mark "11" on page 161.

Hard boards, original pictorial gold stamped and embossed cloth with inserted picture on the front board, gilt decorated spine (a little wear: see scan); the MT frontispiece and title page are slightly foxed (see photos); other pages are fine, 6" x 9"; 712 pages, 193 illustrations including many full-page, very good+ condition.

[Note: the BAL catalog identifies the copies with single publisher imprint on the title page and the mark "11" on the page 161 as the first printing [BAL 3451]. In contrast to BAL's identification, there are many copies with multiple publishers' imprint on the title page and the mark 11 on page 161. A few years ago, we sold a copy dated MDCCCVIII (1898) which also had the mark "11" on page 161]

One hundred and ninety three illustrations, by Dan Beard, A.B. Frost, B.W. Clinedinst, Frederick Dielman, Peter Newell, F.M. Seinor, T.J. Fogarty, C.H. Warren, A.G. Reinhart, F. Berkeley Smith, C. Allan Gilbert, including actual photographs of his trip. Frontispiece of Twain with facsimile inscription and signature: "Be good and you will be lonesome. Mark Twain"

This lecture tour was arranged during the time in Clemens life when his publishing house collapsed, and his financial life was in a poor state. This worldwide lecture tour focuses primarily on Fiji, New Zealand, India, Australia, and South Africa; however, Clemens also lived in London, Switzerland, and Vienna during this time. The book opens in Paris, from which Twain sets out on his journey. In New York, his wife, Olivia, and daughter Clara decide to continue on the tour with Twain.
