Ilda M. Pleasants (American, 20th century). Oil on canvas, ca. 1960s. Signed "Pleasants" on the lower right. A wonderful painting of Pueblo Indian dwellings. In the foreground, a woman tends to the fire in a beehive-shaped horno (oven), as plumes of smoke rise before a multi-storied cluster of adobe pueblos with traditional wooden vigas and ladders. Blue rolling hills rendered with distinct brushstroke patterns appear in the distance as billowing clouds float above. The painting is set in a custom wooden frame with elegant carved floral and chevron motifs adorning the corners as well as a beautiful golden finish. Ilda M. Pleasants is an understudied artist of the American Southwest. We do know that she belonged to the artists' community of Provincetown, because her "Pueblo Summer" was exhibited at First 1960 Show June 26-July 23 hosted by the Provincetown Art Association. In addition, "M(Museum) N(New) M(Mexico) Art Galleries" is handwritten on the verso of the frame of the painting featured in this lot, perhaps indicating that it was once exhibited there. Finally, two Albuquerque addresses associated with Ilda Pleasants are handwritten on the verso as well.

PLEASANTS / 2925 Sierra Vista Rd. / Albuquerque, N. Mexico" is handwritten on the verso of the frame, and there is another Albuquerque address handwritten on the turned over canvas on the verso (lower edge) that is faint and difficult to discern.
