An English Wool Embroidered Ship Picture
Late 19th Century
ship identified illegibly in upper banner HMS Me[?]la, possibly the naval frigate Melampus.
purportedly executed by Commissioned Boatman Richard Amos Sweetenham (1868-1905).
13 3/4 x 17 1/4 inches.
After enlisting in 1884, Sweetenham was first engaged aboard the HMS St. Vincent in the British Royal Navy. His service record includes a brief stint on the coastguard vessel Melampus in the autumn of 1896. The Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Services documents Sweetenham's death by drowning in 1905 after his boat capsized in Larne Harbor, Ireland.
