HESTER BATEMAN GEORGIAN ENGLISH STERLING SILVER TABLESPOON, having an oval bowl on a Hanoverian-type handle. Back of handle impressed with an "HB" maker's mark for Hester Bateman and three mostly worn hallmarks of a lion passant for sterling fineness, a crowned leopard's head city mark for London, and a date mark, possibly "T" for 1774. Together with a repousse sterling silver bread tray by Adelphi Silver Plate Co. of New York City, NY (active 1890-c.1912), featuring a large grape cluster motif with leaves at each end, marked to base with a bee maker's mark, "STERLING / 925/1000", "290", and a retailer's mark of "J. Mc S. BUCHANAN". Total weight: 9.095 ozt. Two pieces total. Spoon circa 1774; tray late 19th/early 20th century. Spoon 8" L; tray 12 5/8" x 6 7/8" OA.
Condition
Spoon in fair overall condition with wear, surface scratches, damage to bowl including worn tip, bending, and dents, possible worn design or repair to back of bowl, handle with slight bending; tray in good to very good overall condition with some wear and surface scratches, area of heavy scratches to well, scattered dents mostly small in size, slight worn spots to raised decoration, slight bending to rim.
